{"id":331,"date":"2012-06-07T23:13:12","date_gmt":"2012-06-07T21:13:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.martyndavis.com\/?p=331"},"modified":"2012-06-08T08:24:24","modified_gmt":"2012-06-08T06:24:24","slug":"kubuntu-and-horrible-browser-fonts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.martyndavis.com\/?p=331","title":{"rendered":"Kubuntu and Horrible Browser Fonts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I can&#8217;t be the only victim for this&#8230; I&#8217;ve experienced it on two different machines, on two versions of Kubuntu (11.08 and 12.04).<\/p>\n<p>If I go into System Settings \u2192 Application Appearance \u2192 Fonts and select &#8220;Enabled&#8221; for &#8220;Use anti-aliasing&#8221; then click &#8220;Configure&#8221; and select &#8220;Use sub-pixel rendering&#8221;, then (after a restart probably) all the fonts in the browser (Chrome, Chromium or Firefox) look absolutely\u00a0<strong>horrible<\/strong>. I&#8217;ve spent two days on and off trying to fix this.<\/p>\n<p>The fix I&#8217;ve found is to delete <strong>~\/.fonts.conf <\/strong>and<strong> ~\/.kderc <\/strong>(not sure at this stage which is the culprit), log out and back in, and, hey presto, fonts are OK again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update: <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/imgur.com\/a\/YIVSy \">example before and after screenshots can be seen here<\/a>\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0 the top shows nice smooth fonts and the bottom, to my eye, look thin, spindly and a bit jagged.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I can&#8217;t be the only victim for this&#8230; I&#8217;ve experienced it on two different machines, on two versions of Kubuntu (11.08 and 12.04).
